Very sluggish KDE response

I'm using Exceed 10 under Windows XP. I am using the SSH encryption
package. Attaching to a Solaris host running the CDE
desktop, performance is fine. Doing the same to a Linux machine (RH 9)
running KDE is excruciatingly slow (window updating
is glacial). The latter is a much more powerful host than the former,
so why the problem? Is it KDE itself? Any settings I can
adjust to make this better?
