Installation Guidlines

Getting Started
ImageBASIC can be easily installed from the demo CD. Before proceeding, one should go through the following check list for a successful install.

1.  Do you have any old versions of ImageBASIC on this machine?

•If Yes, and whether you are replacing a very old version, or whether you are using a maintenance upgrade of you version, proceed to the Clean Install Instructions, (unless you are going to install ImageBASIC on the machine with a preexisting version. Then, proceed to MultipleVersion Install Instructions)
•If No, Proceed to next step

2.  Do you have any other imaging packages on your computer?

•If Yes, proceed to the Clean Install Instructions
•If No, proceed to next step.
•If I haven't the faintest idea, proceed to the Clean Install Instructions

3.  After installation, if there is a licensing difficulty, please call our techsupport department at 1-800-IBTools.

Instructions for Installing from a CD
Demo CDs are given at shows and contain full working development versions of ImageBASIC. The most recent CDs have both ImageBASIC 2X and ImageBASIC 3X as well as full versions of other associated products.

To install ImageBASIC from a CD:

  1. If you already have a version of ImageBASIC or another imaging program on the machine, please read the Clean Install Instructions before proceeding with these instruction.
  2. Load the CD in the drive.
  3. The CD should run automatically, but if it does not, go to the CD Directory and run the Setup.exe file.
  4. When the screen comes up, choose the button for which version you wish to install.   The install program will put all of the necessary files in the path and the Windows directory.

Clean Install Instructions
NOTE: Do NOT follow this directions if you are going to install multiple versions on the same machine. See the Multiple Versions Install Instructions.

The most common cause of errors during initial trials of ImageBASIC is the presence of old versions of some of the underlying files used by this product. Four types of files are frequent culprits, because they have been included in many other off-the-shelf software packages such as Calera and Caere. If you find and remove them, most of the initial problems will be immediately solved.

*.PXW
*.PXI
PIX*.DLL
*.CHW
NWCALLS.DLL

If you find any of these files, they should be deleted. This will probably cause the original software package to stop working, but there is no other way to ensure ImageBASIC will find only the proper files.

There should be no files of these types anywhere on the PATH except the ImageBASIC files which were installed in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM and WINDOWS\PIXTRAN directories.

Do not delete NWCALLS until you are ready to install ImageBASIC. This is a licensing file used by other software as well, and if you delete it, you may no longer be authorized to use Lotus Notes, etc.

Remove the /PIXTRAN directory. It will be located in /WINDOWS. It contains all of the PIX.* files used in scanning. When you install ImageBASIC, it will reload all of the new PIX files.

Now, you are ready to install your version of ImageBASIC, proceed to the Install instructions.

Multiple Version Install Instructions
Different ImageBASIC versions can be added to the same machine. But, because they share many of the same file names, it is necessary to partition them to separate directories.

1. Move the contents of the WINDOWS\PIXTRAN directory into the IMGBASIC folder.   Be sure to move only the files themselves,  do not create a subdirectory for them. Also, be sure to actually move them and not copy them.

2. Perform a search in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for PIX*.DLL   files, and move them all into the IMGBASIC folder. Be sure to actually move them, and not simply copy them.

3. After all the files are combined into one single directory (IMGBASIC),  rename the directory to IBXX (XX being the ImageBASIC version for future reference).

4.  After this folder is renamed, you can run through the regular installation of the next ImageBASIC version. The new installation will create a new IMGBASIC folder, a new WINDOWS\PIXTRAN  folder as well as add the PIX*.DLL files to the WINDOWS\ SYSTEM directory.

5. After the install, Run through steps 1 through 3 with the new version.

To activate any one version of ImageBASIC, simply rename the desired version's folder to IMGBASIC.
